Argyraspides - the Silver Shields, famed veterans of Alexander the Great's army, and later of his Successors. The Silver Shields were the hardened veterans of Alexander's army during his campaign in India and back from it. It's proposed that these veterans (for one reason or another) coated their shields with silver after campaigning in India.
Their name means "Silver Shield". It comes from the Greek word for silver - Argyros, and Aspida or Aspis, meaning shield.
Argyraspids are mostly associated with the Seleucid Empire - the state that formed from Alexander's eastern territories (modern-day Syria, Iraq, Iran, and parts of Turkey). It was first ruled by Seleukos I Nicator, one of Alexander's generals. The empire took its name from him.
The text behind our Silver Shield - Arche Seleukeia, roughly translates to Seleucid Empire.
The Seleucids are my personal favorite of Alexander's successors, and the Silver Shields are one of my favorite ancient military regiments. And so I felt it appropriate to pay homage to them with this drawing.
